Event Summary

This course will cover some of the challenges with introducing hydrogen into an operator’s natural gas pipeline system, how to apply the API 1173 Pipeline Safety Management System to evaluate associated risks, and how to address the potential impacts of hydrogen throughout the design processes.

Attendees will receive 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH) upon completion.

  • Develop a basic understanding of hydrogen
  • Gain understanding of how to apply API 1173 to thoroughly evaluate existing controls and the potential risks introduced
  • Learn how the hydrogen standards will impact your pipeline system design, and the upfront analysis required to assess the impact on your existing pipeline system
  • Review of case studies where the PSMS principles were applied and the impact to the operator’s pipeline system.

Jim Francis

VP, SMS Consulting | ENTRUST Solutions Group


Jim Francis is the vice president of SMS Consulting at ENTRUST Solutions Group.  In his role, Jim supports ENTRUST’s clients on the implementation of safety management systems and other compliance, safety, operations, and engineering programs.  Prior to joining ENTRUST, Jim spent 30 years serving utility customers in various engineering and operations roles at Vectren and CenterPoint Energy.  This includes executive roles leading safety, human resources, system integrity, engineering, asset management, compliance, and other business functions.

Tim Harris, PE

Principal Engineer | EN Renewables


Mr. Harris is a registered professional engineer who helps to lead ENTRUST’S  Renewable Energy practice with an emphasis on RNG, Hydrogen, and ESG Strategy. Previously at Southern Company Gas, he helped start the research and development organization, developed the HyBlend consortium concept, and coauthored hydrogen research. Now, Mr. Harris leverages his previous experience to lead hydrogen and RNG projects while helping clients develop and implement ESG strategies.
