Natural Gas Marketing 101

Virtual, Instructor-Led

Event Summary

This class will cover the key commercial functions inside a natural gas marketing firm, including origination, trading, risk management, asset management, scheduling and others.  You’ll learn some key aspects of each of these functions, and also how they work together to create a complete business.  For example, originators work to meet customers’ long-term needs, while traders buy and sell natural gas based on current market trends. Still, both groups have to communicate every day to stay coordinated.  Risk managers monitor and measure overall financial risks but also have to be in close contact with other parts of the organization.  In this class, we’ll discuss why that coordination is necessary and how it is done.  Additionally, we’ll spend some time on the daily activities of professionals like traders, originators, and schedulers, giving you a feel for what they do every day.

Attendees will receive 2 Professional Development Hours (PDH) upon completion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the basics of natural gas marketing
  • Become familiar with deal types and how/why they are structured as they are
  • Understand the “behind the scenes” work at a marketing firm

Who Should Attend

This class is a broad-brush review of how a gas marketing firm works, not a detailed examination of any one particular aspect of gas marketing.  While we’ll cover some aspects of jobs in the firm, this won’t be “Trading 101” or “Risk Management 101.”  This class will be useful to anyone who has considered (or is considering) a career in energy marketing and also to anyone who has wondered, “What goes in a trading/marketing company?”  It will be useful for anyone who deals with gas marketers, both wholesale producers and consumers.
