2013 Environmental Excellence Awards

Partnership – Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation

“The Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust”

Congratulations to Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation for being selected as this year’s winner of the SGA Environmental Excellence Award in the Partnership category.

Here’s a brief excerpt from the submission for the award:

The 153-acre Dennis Farm property is situated in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, in the Marcellus Shale region of northeastern Pennsylvania. The farm was initially settled by African American Prince Perkins and his family, who moved to northeast Pennsylvania from Connecticut in 1793. For 220 years and seven generations, the property has remained in ownership of the Perkins-Dennis families. Although it hasn’t been a working farm since the early 20th century, the family has a considerable quantity of historical documents, books, photographs, and records associated with the property in their possession that provides insight into the lives of free African Americans over the course of a century and a half, as well as the agricultural legacy of the area.

Documented historic resources on the property include:

  • The Dennis Farmhouse (built first quarter of the 19th century; remodeled circa 1930)
  • The Dennis Farm Agricultural Complex ruins
  • Site of the Prince Perkins homestead (late-18th century)
  • The Perkins-Dennis Cemetery (grave sites include a veteran of the American Revolution, a veteran of the Civil War, and forty other family members); and
  • An elaborate network of stone walls built during the 19th century.

The Dennis Farm is one of few early African American-owned farms in northeastern Pennsylvania. There is presently no other site in the northeastern United States that is actively preserving and presenting, to the public, this aspect of the African-American experience. Scholars have also identified the Dennis Farm as a potential location associated with the history of the Underground Railroad. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission considers the Dennis Farm as eligible for listing to the National Register of Historic Places and National organizations, including the Smithsonian Museum and The National Trust for Historic Preservation, have recognized the unique historical qualities of the property.

Awards will be presented at this year’s Environmental, Safety & Health, and Training Conference in St. Louis, MO on June 4th.
