1776 was an important year for our nation, and industry. In the U.S., Alessandro Volta, the father of the battery, first scientifically identified natural gas. In 1785, the British first began using natural gas commercially, as fuel for lamps. Finally, in 1821, William A. Hart drilled the first deep well to obtain natural gas in Fredonia, New York. Fredonia Gas Light Company would become the first natural gas company — paving the way for energy independence.
