Controlling Static Electricity on Plastic Pipe
The SGA Distribution Technical Training Committee, in
conjunction with the Committee for Employee Safety and Health, presents
a video training program designed to inform supervisors and workers on
the potentially hazardous aspects of static electricity on plastic pipe.
Course objectives
Upon viewing the video, participating in an informed
discussion session, and successfully completing the post-test, the participant
will be able to do the following when working on plastic gas distribution
systems:
- Identify the causes of static electricity,
- List the safety equipment needed, and
- Describe procedures for safely controlling static electricity.
The program covers
- A brief history of static electricity and its properties.
- A demonstration of safe, easy methods for controlling
the potential hazard while using plastic pipe.
- How static electricity is generated when using plastic
pipe.
- How to safely ground all tools and squeeze-off devices.
- The personal protective equipment and general safety
equipment used to meet minimum
requirements.
- How purge operations should be conducted to reduce the
possibility of static charging.
The complete program includes
- 16-minute video designed to inform all employees of the
static electricity hazard.
- Leader's Guide with a meeting outline, discussion
questions, glossary, pre-test and post-test.
- Participant's Workbook designed to enhance your
employees' training experience.
About the workbooks
The Leader's Guide was prepared to assist you
in conducting a safety training session for personnel who work with plastic
pipe in an environment where natural gas is present. The program emphasizes
the procedures and equipment necessary to prevent static buildup and
uncontrolled discharge. Information contained in this program was collected
by SGA member companies from data and expertise currently available to
the natural gas industry.
The intended audience
- Operating employees of gas distribution companies,
- Employees of companies installing plastic gas piping
systems, and
- Fire department and other emergency service organizations.
The format of this guide is designed to make it easy to introduce
the video and involve all attendees in learning the subject matter—handling
plastic pipe safely when natural gas is present. This program is just
one of many educational resources available from the Southern Gas Association.
