Technologies for Intrusion Monitoring

A major source of potential damage to pipelines and pipeline facilities is accidental or intentional acts of people. Monitoring technologies are available to address some of these threats.

This session encompassed the following topics:

1. A perspective on the people threats to various gas pipeline facilities:

  • Vandalism
  • Terrorism

Presenter: Jim Taylor, Branch Chief for Threats, Vulnerabilities & Consequences,
TSNM Pipeline Security Division,Transportation Security Administration, on "Critical Infrastructure Security" .

2. The technologies of monitoring for such threats along the pipeline right-of-way.
Presenter: Jeff Johnson, GE Oil & Gas, PII- discussing the techniques of their "ThreatScan" system

3. Experience of a pipeline operator at deploying a monitoring system along a pipeline right-of-way.
Presenter: Amy Jo McKean, Engineer, Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline. SSCGP have deployed the "ThreatScan" system along 13 miles of their pipeline right-of-way.

4. The technologies of monitoring for incursions into fenced-in facilities such as: gas control centers; compressor stations; metering/regulating stations etc.
