SGA's Training Week provides an opportunity for employees to receive valuable, industry specific training in a short time frame.   New employees or employees new to a job function who need get up to speed quickly may attend Introduction to the Natural Gas  Industry for a broad overview of the industry, from the wellhead to the burner tip.

Next,  they can attend one of three courses on topics that impact every company's bottom line -- Introduction to Regulated Natural Gas Accounting, The Ratemaking Process, or How Natural Gas Is Bought and Sold.   Or, attend any one class of interest.

Registration Fees:  Any single class $425 for SGA member company employee; $625 non-member.  The discounted fee for two classes -   Introduction to the Gas Industry class plus one other class, is only $695 member/$895 non-member.

Introduction to the Natural Gas Industry

Tuesday Sept. 30 - 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday Oct. 1 - 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.

This program provides practical information about the natural gas industry in a fast paced format. A broad range of subjects will be covered, from exploration and production to the latest technology and issues impacting the industry.

Who Should Attend

Personnel new to the industry or new to a job function, or any employee needing an overview of the gas industry will benefit by attending. Excellent training for employees from natural gas, electric or combination gas/electric companies.

Introduction to Regulated Natural Gas Accounting

Wednesday Oct. 1 - 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. & Thursday Oct. 2 - 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Provides an overview of the major functions related to gas industry accounting.  The information will help new personnel get up to speed quickly on a wide range of accounting processes, including  the fundamental  issues facing a regulated industry.  Topics include:

  • Universal System of Accounts
  • Financial Reporting
  • Gas Purchase Accounting
  • Taxes
  • Audits
  • Property Accounting
  • Regulatory Concepts and Concerns
  • Regulated vs. Non-regulated Accounting Issues
  • The Rate Process

Who Should Attend

Entry level accounting personnel from all departments, including:  Gas Accounting;   Property Accounting;    Budget & Planning;  Tax;    General Accounting;  Financial Reporting;  Rate professionals (2 years or less);  Individuals from other departments interfacing with accounting.

The Ratemaking Process

Wednesday Oct.1 - 1:00 - 4:30 p.m. & Thursday Oct. 2 - 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Ratemaking Process provides a basic overview of the rate process, for new rate professionals, or non-rate staff who need a better understanding of the process.

  • Cost of service issues
  • Rate design components
  • Regulatory considerations
  • Revenue Decoupling trends
  • Strategic Ratemaking

Also included is an interactive group exercise, the Van Go Transportation Co., which  illustrates issues companies face when structuring their rates and determining if services are fixed, variable or both.

The final half-day provides an opportunity for participants to apply the information they received in previous sessions by participating in The Ratemaking Game, which consists of two case studies based on actual rate cases.  Participants are divided into role-playing groups comprised of  gas company representatives, commissioners, consumer advocates and interveners to discuss and determine the result of each case.

- Rate Analysts (two years or less) from LDC, transmission, or  gas supply marketing companies

- Non-rate professionals from departments who need a broad understanding of the rate process, including:  Operations,  Government Relations, Marketing, Communcations, Public Affairs, Accounting, Engineering, Human Resources and other departments.

How Natural Gas Is Bought and Sold 
Thurs. Oct. 2 - 8:30 a.m. -  4:00 pm & Friday Oct. 3 - 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.

This workshop addresses the fundamentals of buying and selling natural gas.  The first part of the class covers the physical system, while the second part covers the financial systems and processes.

Topics include the evolution of gas purchasing; basic knowledge and terms (firm vs. interruptible transportation, NAESB, etc.); gas supply and transportation issues (capacity release, price differentials, imbalances, nominations, confirmations/allocations, penalties, cash-outs, and risk management.

The 2nd part of the class covers the financial aspects of buying and selling gas, including market analysis, gas purchasing scenarios, risk management, the processes involved in developing a supply portfolio, and the different tools and financial mechanisms that can be utilized. 

Who Should Attend

  • Industrial and commercial marketers that deal with end users who buy large volumes of gas or are transportation customers.                    
  • Entry level gas supply marketing professionals.  Anyone interested in an overview of  the gas buying and selling process

Grand Hyatt Buckhead – Atlanta GA  3300 Peachtree Road, Atlanta GA 30305   (404) 237 1234.  Request the Southern Gas Association rate of $195.  Cutoff for reservations is September 7, 2008.  All classes will be conducted at the hotel.

Taxis: One way fares to the hotel - approximately $40.

Car Rentals: Located on the first floor of the airport

MARTA: The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train is located within the airport.  The fare is only  $2.00 one way.   Trains depart every 5-10 minutes. Grand Hyatt Atlanta guests should board the Northbound train (N to North Springs). Exit at the Buckhead Station N7 onto Peachtree Road S. The hotel is 2 blocks away.

(The Grand Hyatt does not operate an airport shuttle)
